My wife and I celebrated our first anniversary on the beaches in Thailand. Being savvy travelers, we always asked to see the menu to check the prices before choosing a restaurant and ask to see a room before committing to stay in a hotel. This is standard practice for travelers to do to minimize the risk of being taken advantage of. While in Thailand, we often heard the expression “same, same, but different” as a way to encourage us that there was no need to look any further.
What we learned was that most hotel rooms and menus were actually remarkably similar, despite any differences that there were.
Culture is a lot like that too – same, same but different. We may speak different languages, but we talk about similar things. We may eat different odds, but we all eat. We may enjoy different sports, but we enjoy the competition. We may listen to different types of music, but music is an integral part of our lives. We all have families, but each family may interact a little differently.
We do a lot of things that on the surface that may look quite different, but on closer examination, our differences are AMAZINGLY similar.
Same, Same, But Different indeed ~
