I have heard it called the Boomerang Effect – what you send out to the world is what you get back.
My mom taught piano and a whole lot more. She loved her students and her students loved her. Students she taught many years ago still write, call, and visit her. A student she taught in the early 1960’s who is now a Professor of Chemistry at a Big Ten university told me that of all the teachers/professors she has had in her life, my mom was one of two most influential on the person she is today.
And my mom’s kindness and love as a teacher, did not just come back to her in words of thanks, it came back in actions too. When I was in elementary school and both my mom and my dad were sick, there were many her students and their families who volunteered to take care of me and make sure I was safe, had transportation, and food – plenty of delicious food.
As teachers, youth coaches and youth work professionals, the lessons you teach, while important, are often NOT what young people will carry with them into their lives. They will carry you. The way you teach and the amount you care about them is what they will remember. It is an awesome responsibility to think that they will carry how you treated them throughout their life.
In things big and small, it is important to remember that you do matter in the lives of the young people you interact with every day. Young people won’t care what you know unless they know that you care.
BTW – on the day I wrote this, I received 2 tickets with parking pass to a Minnesota United MLS game. It will be my first game.
