Respect in Action

Respect isn't just an abstract idea—it’s something we see, feel, and experience through the actions of others. To understand how to earn respect, it helps to look at the people who already inspire us.

Activity: The Respect Reflection

Follow these three steps to examine what makes someone worthy of respect and how you can practice those same qualities in your own life.

Step 1: Choose Your Role Model

Think of one person you deeply respect. This could be:

  • A teacher, coach, or mentor

  • A friend or family member

  • A leader, creator, or community figure

Step 2: Identify the "Why"

On a sheet of paper or in your journal, answer the following questions about this person:

  • What specific actions or behaviors make you respect them? (e.g., How do they treat others when things get tough? How do they listen?)

  • How do they make people feel when they are around?

  • What character traits stand out most? (e.g., honesty, reliability, kindness, composure)

Step 3: Map Your Own Action Plan

Look at the traits and actions you wrote down for Step 2. Choose two or three specific habits that you want to adopt in your own daily life.

Write down one concrete action you can take this week to demonstrate that same quality to your peers, family, or teammates.
